Stocks in Hong Kong opened 0.19 percent lower following losses on Wall Street as well as concerns about the Chinese economy. The benchmark Hang Seng Index opened 38.00 points lower at 19,775.98.
In Shanghai, shares were down 1.21 percent in early trading, adding to a 5.3 percent loss a day earlier, on persistent worries over a domestic liquidity squeeze, dealers said. The benchmark Shanghai Composite Index slid 23.85 points to 1,939.39.
Stocks in Tokyo moved narrowly at the open. The benchmark Nikkei 225 index hovered around the break-even point in the first few minutes of trading. It was up 0.10 percent, or 13.30 points, to 13,076.08 .
In New York the Dow Jones Industrial Average sank 139.84 points, or 0.94 percent, to 14,659.56 on Monday.
